I started playing in 1989 on cornet at Clipstone Colliery Welfare Band at the age of 31, moved to at Burbage Band (Buxton), Darley Band, Riddings, Newstead Welfare Band and Shirland Miners Welfare Band, on cornet.   I had a break for four years from playing before joining Melton Band in 2007.   I moved to Hucknall and Linby MC Band at the beginning of 2009 to play 1st Baritone, an instrument I have longed to play for years but never had the opportunity and to be with my family.   I am married to Paul who plays cornet (rep) and I live in Grantham.   My daughter plays flugel in my band and my son plays Bass Trombone for a top section band.
I have a granddaughter and grandson.  I started playing for Boobs and Brass in the summer of 2009 when rehearsals began to record the CD.

I first started playing the cornet aged 11, in Beanfield School Brass Band.  Highlights of being in the school band include a couple of performances at the Albert Hall, one memorable time where we accompanied the well known trombonist Don Lusher, in a piece he wrote specifically for the band to perform at the Albert Hall - 'Cameo for trombone'
After 18 months of cornet I transferred on to baritone - which I have played ever since - although I do occasionally help out other bands on back row cornet.
I am very proud to be a member of Boobs and Brass

I began playing musical instruments at the tender age of 9 when I took piano lessons at the Watford School of Music.  I added the oboe to my repertoire shortly after and then started singing.  I sang with the London Symphony Chorus and the Malcolm Sargent Festival Choir and then took a break to have a family.  I had always wanted to play a brass instrument but had been told by my mum that “it was not lady like!”.  So, when I had my own home, I purchased a trumpet and started playing.  When my son showed an interest in the tenor horn, I fell in love with it and got rid of the trumpet.  Having seen Rushden Town Band play with my daughter *(Kathryn’s) school, I joined it, nearly 5 years ago.  After a year on tenor horn, it was suggested that I play baritone instead and have played it ever since and enjoyed it even more than the tenor horn!  I am pleased to say that my mum now thinks that brass bands are great!

I learnt how to play a cornet when I joined the Salvation Army in Walthamstow, East London at the age of 14. When I was 20 I joined the East London Youth Band which opened its doors to lady players by which time I had moved onto the Flugel. As the upper limit was 25 I left the youth band and moved on to Tenor Horn in the Local Salvation Army Band. Due to my work I then moved around the country and took a break from playing until I moved to Cornwall when I joined The Redruth Town band where I was introduced into contesting which I had never done before. Playing Tenor Horn I played with Redruth for approx 9 years when again my work moved me up to Northampton where I am currently playing Baritone and have played for the last ten year with various bands.

Sam started playing brass instruments at the age of 10 on the cornet, before finally landing on her chosen instrument, the baritone. She started her playing with the local Harborough Band, and also playing with the award winning Youth Brass 2000. Before moving to Nottingham to further her studies Sam was a regular fixture of the Wigston Band in Leicester. Whilst at University Sam started playing with the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band, and spent an enjoyable 8 years with them, moving from the 4th to the 2nd section and winning the 3rd section National Finals along the way. Having spent an enjoyable 2 years with The Kibworth band Sam now plays with the Thoresby Colliery Band in North Nottinghamshire. Sam is a Teacher of Chemistry in Nottingham.
